Maybe you were told an implant isn't possible yet, or a tooth was removed years ago and the area has started to look sunken. Maybe a denture that once fit well now shifts when you eat. These are all signs of the same underlying issue: the jawbone has lost volume. For our Del Mar patients, bone grafting is often the quiet first step that makes everything else — a single implant, a full-arch restoration, a stable bite — possible again.

Bone grafting is a procedure that adds volume and density to an area of the jaw where bone has thinned or receded. Your jawbone depends on the stimulation of tooth roots to stay strong. When a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone in that spot no longer receives that signal and gradually resorbs. Over months and years, the ridge narrows, the height drops, and there may not be enough structure left to anchor a dental implant securely.

A graft rebuilds that foundation. Grafting material is placed into the deficient site and, over a healing period, your own bone integrates with and replaces it, creating a stable base. We use grafting most often in support of implant treatment, including All-on-4 and All-on-6 full-arch cases, where predictable bone support across the arch matters enormously. It can also be performed at the time of an extraction to preserve the socket and prevent collapse before it happens — often the simplest and least involved version of this treatment.

Candidacy comes down to what we see clinically and what you want your smile to do. Patients who come to our Del Mar-area practice for grafting typically fall into a few groups: those missing one or more teeth for an extended period, those who have worn removable dentures and noticed the ridge flattening, those with bone loss related to periodontal disease, and those planning an extraction who want to protect the site for a future implant.

We evaluate all of this during a complimentary consultation. That appointment is a real conversation, not a sales pitch — we examine the area, discuss your goals, explain whether grafting is needed at all, and outline what a full treatment timeline would look like. Because our practice brings cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics together under one roof, we also consider how the restored area will affect the shape and support of your lower face, not just the tooth itself. Some patients learn they have sufficient bone and can proceed directly to an implant. Others learn grafting will meaningfully improve the long-term result. Either way, you leave knowing where you stand.

What the Process and Recovery Involve

Treatment begins with planning. We assess the site, determine how much volume is needed, and select the grafting approach that fits your anatomy and your restorative plan. On the day of the procedure, the area is thoroughly numbed, the site is accessed, grafting material is placed, and the tissue is closed to protect it while healing begins.

Healing is gradual and largely quiet. Your body needs time to integrate the graft before an implant can be placed, and rushing that step undermines the result. Most discomfort is manageable and concentrated in the first several days.

  • Expect some swelling and tenderness in the first few days, which typically eases steadily
  • Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the graft site
  • Keep the area clean exactly as we instruct, being gentle around the surgical site
  • Avoid smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing during early healing
  • Attend your follow-up visits so we can confirm the graft is integrating as expected

We stay in contact through this period. If something feels off, we want to hear from you rather than have you wait it out. Del Mar patients often appreciate being able to fold short follow-up visits into an existing trip to our studio rather than treating each one as a separate errand.

Cost, Financing, and Getting Started

We are an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and do not bill insurance. We made that choice deliberately: it lets us plan treatment around what your case actually requires and how much time it deserves, rather than around coverage limits. We welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we quote your treatment clearly before anything begins so there are no surprises.

For patients who prefer to spread payments over time, we offer financing through Cherry. Many people use it to combine grafting with the implant or restorative work that follows, so the entire plan is handled as one arrangement.

If you're in Del Mar and have been putting off replacing a tooth because you were told the bone wasn't there, that conversation is worth revisiting. Reach out to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Darian Anderson and our team, and let's find out what your options actually are.
