Bone Grafting
We rebuild jawbone volume so your implants have the strong, stable foundation they need to last.

Why choose us
Benefits of Bone Grafting
Rebuilds Jawbone Support
We restore lost bone volume so your jaw has the strength to hold an implant securely.
Makes Implants Possible
Grafting can open the door to All-on-4, All-on-6, or single implants when bone loss once ruled them out.
Preserves Facial Shape
Maintaining bone helps protect the natural contours of your jaw and lower face.
Planned With Your Smile
We plan grafting alongside your overall smile and facial aesthetics, not as an isolated procedure.
Start With A Conversation
Your consultation is complimentary, and financing through Cherry is available for self-pay care.
A patient comes in hoping for implants after losing a molar a few years back. The tooth is gone, the gap has been manageable, and now they're ready for something permanent. On the scan, though, the jawbone where that tooth once sat has thinned and narrowed — the body reabsorbed bone it no longer needed to support a root. This is one of the most common moments we talk about grafting: not as a setback, but as the groundwork that makes a strong, well-positioned implant possible.
Bone grafting adds volume and density back to areas of the jaw where bone has been lost. When a natural tooth is present, its root constantly stimulates the surrounding bone and signals the body to maintain it. Once that root is gone — from extraction, injury, gum disease, or a tooth that failed years ago — that stimulation disappears and the ridge gradually shrinks in both height and width. A graft places material into the deficient site so your body can build new bone around and through it over time, restoring a foundation that can hold an implant securely.
In our office, grafting most often comes up in conversations about dental implants, including full-arch solutions like All-on-4 and All-on-6. Implants rely on bone the way a fence post relies on solid ground; without enough of it, an implant can't be placed in the ideal position for function or appearance. Grafting also matters aesthetically. A collapsed ridge can leave a visible dip in the gumline or a shadow under the lip, and rebuilding that contour supports the soft tissue so the finished restoration looks natural rather than obviously replaced. Because we plan cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics together at Muse, we're always thinking about how the underlying structure affects the visible result.
Good candidates are people who want a lasting tooth replacement and have been told — or suspect — that their bone volume isn't quite there yet. That includes patients missing a single tooth for several years, those facing an extraction who want to preserve the site before it deteriorates, patients with bone loss from periodontal disease, and people considering full-arch restoration after long-term denture wear. Timing varies: sometimes grafting happens at the moment of extraction to protect the socket, and sometimes it's a separate step months or years later.
What we want every candidate to understand is that grafting is a healing-based procedure, not an instant fix. The graft material serves as a scaffold, and your own body does the real work of turning it into living bone. That takes time, and the exact timeline depends on the size of the site, where it is in the mouth, and your individual healing. We'd rather be honest about that up front than rush a treatment plan. During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Darian Anderson will review your situation, explain what your bone looks like today, and walk you through whether grafting is genuinely needed or whether another approach makes more sense.
Things worth discussing with us before you decide:
- Your overall health history and any medications that can affect healing
- Whether you smoke, since tobacco use can interfere with recovery
- How long the area has been missing a tooth and how much volume has already been lost
- Your goals — a single implant, a full arch, or preserving a site for later
- How grafting fits into the overall sequence and timing of your treatment plan
Aftercare, Healing, and the Results You Can Expect
Recovery asks for patience and a light touch. In the first days, we'll ask you to protect the site by avoiding hard or crunchy foods, skipping straws, and keeping the area clean gently rather than aggressively. Some swelling and tenderness are normal parts of healing. The most important thing you can do is follow the specific instructions we give you for your case and let us know promptly if anything feels off, so we can check on it early.
Over the following weeks and months, the graft integrates and matures. We'll monitor your progress and let you know when the site is ready for the next phase. The payoff is a jaw that can properly support an implant — and a final restoration with the stability and natural contour that comes from building on solid ground.
Payment, Financing, and Getting Started
We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service studio and don't bill insurance, which lets us plan treatment around what's genuinely right for you. We welcome self-pay patients and offer financing through Cherry, so you can spread the investment over time.
Your consultation is complimentary. If you're in Del Mar, Encinitas, La Jolla, Solana Beach, or anywhere in San Diego and wondering whether grafting is part of your path to implants, we'd love to sit down with you and take a look together.
