All-on-X Dental Implants in Encinitas

All-on-X Dental Implants in Encinitas

Failing teeth, a loose lower denture that shifts during dinner, or years of patching one molar after another — these are the situations that bring Encinitas patients to us asking about full-arch implants. All-on-X is the umbrella term for replacing an entire upper or lower arch of teeth with a fixed bridge anchored to a small number of dental implants. Instead of restoring each missing tooth individually, we rebuild the whole arch at once on a foundation that stays put.

The "X" in All-on-X simply stands for the number of implants used to support the arch. In our office, that number is most often four or six, and the two approaches share the same core idea: titanium implant posts are placed into the jawbone, where they fuse with bone over time, and a full bridge of teeth is secured to those posts. The bridge doesn't come out at night, doesn't rely on adhesive, and doesn't cover the roof of your mouth the way a traditional upper denture does.

All-on-4 uses four implants per arch, often angled toward the back to take advantage of denser available bone. It tends to suit patients who want the most streamlined path to a fixed arch and who have adequate bone in the front portion of the jaw. All-on-6 adds two additional implants, spreading the load of chewing forces across more support points. We often discuss All-on-6 with patients who have more bone volume to work with, who grind or clench, or who want extra redundancy built into the restoration. Neither option is automatically better — the right choice comes out of imaging, bone quality, bite forces, and what you want your final smile to look and feel like.

Most people who ask about All-on-X fall into a few recognizable groups. Some have advanced periodontal disease and have been told their remaining teeth are not worth saving. Others already wear a full denture and are tired of the movement, the sore spots, and the foods they've quietly stopped ordering. Some have a mouth full of old crowns, root canals, and bridges that keep failing one at a time, and they want to stop spending money on repairs that don't last.

Good candidacy comes down to general health, gum health, and whether there's enough bone to hold implants securely. Bone loss is common after teeth have been missing for a while, but it isn't automatically a dealbreaker — we also perform bone grafting, which can build up deficient areas so implants have something solid to anchor into. Smoking, uncontrolled medical conditions, and untreated infection all factor into planning as well. Because our first consultation is complimentary, Encinitas patients can get a straight answer about candidacy before committing to anything.

  • A fixed arch that stays in place for eating, speaking, and laughing
  • No palate coverage on upper arches, which helps preserve taste and comfort
  • Fewer implants than replacing every tooth individually
  • Implants that stimulate the jawbone where natural roots used to
  • A smile designed alongside your facial proportions, not in isolation

How Treatment Unfolds, Step by Step

Planning starts with records: imaging to assess bone, an exam of your gums and remaining teeth, and a conversation about what bothers you most now. Because we also practice Digital Smile Design, we can plan tooth shape, length, and midline with your face in view — a benefit of having cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics under one roof. Dr. Darian Anderson handles the dental side; Sarah Garces, NP-C, and our medical director, Dr. Monica Kieu, round out the team when facial balancing is part of the conversation.

Surgery day typically includes removing any failing teeth, placing the implants, and attaching a provisional bridge so you don't leave without teeth. Then comes healing, usually several months, while the implants integrate with bone. During that stretch you'll eat softer foods and keep follow-up visits so we can monitor healing. Once integration is confirmed, we fabricate and fit the final bridge, refining the bite and the aesthetics.

Aftercare, Cost, and Getting Started

Long-term care is more straightforward than most people expect, but it isn't optional. You'll clean under the bridge daily with the tools we show you, keep regular hygiene visits, and protect the restoration with a nightguard if you clench.

We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and don't bill insurance, which keeps treatment decisions between you and us. We welcome self-pay patients and offer financing through Cherry so the investment can be spread over time. Encinitas patients are welcome to book a complimentary consultation and get a clear plan and number before deciding anything.
