Bone Grafting in Encinitas

Bone Grafting in Encinitas

When a tooth has been missing for a while, the jawbone underneath it doesn't stay the same. Bone needs pressure from a tooth root to stay dense and healthy, and once that stimulation disappears, the ridge slowly narrows and shrinks. For our Encinitas patients, this usually shows up in one of two ways: a dental implant plan that can't move forward because there isn't enough bone to hold it, or a change in facial contour and bite that wasn't there a few years ago. Bone grafting is how we rebuild that foundation so the rest of the plan — an implant, a full-arch restoration, a stable bite — actually has something solid to stand on.

A bone graft adds grafting material to an area of the jaw where bone volume has been lost or is expected to be lost. Over the following months, your body uses that material as a scaffold, gradually replacing it with your own new bone. The result is a thicker, taller ridge that can support an implant post or hold a restoration in proper position.

We see several common situations in our Encinitas patients. Some have had a tooth removed years ago and are only now exploring implants. Others need an extraction and want a graft placed at the same time to preserve the site — often called ridge preservation — so future options stay open. Some are planning All-on-4 or All-on-6 dental implants and need targeted grafting in specific areas of the arch before the implants can be placed. And some have lost bone alongside gum disease, where grafting becomes part of a broader periodontal plan. Because our office covers general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, and prosthodontics, we're able to look at grafting as one step inside a complete treatment sequence rather than an isolated procedure.

The starting point is a complimentary consultation. We talk through what you want your smile to do, examine the area in question, and use imaging to understand how much bone is actually present and where it's thinnest. That's also when we discuss whether grafting is genuinely necessary for your goals — sometimes it is essential, and sometimes the plan can be adjusted around what's already there. We'd rather have that conversation honestly upfront than surprise you later.

On the day of the procedure, the area is numbed thoroughly before we begin. We access the site, clean and prepare the bone surface, place the grafting material, and secure it so it stays where it needs to be while healing begins. Many grafts are placed in a single appointment, and grafts done at the time of an extraction combine both steps in one visit. You'll leave with written aftercare instructions and a clear idea of what the next several months look like.

Here's what most patients can expect around the procedure:

  • Numbing before any work begins, with comfort checked throughout
  • A defined healing period while your body replaces the graft with its own bone
  • Follow-up visits so we can confirm the site is maturing as planned
  • Implant placement scheduled only once the foundation is ready
  • A coordinated plan that connects grafting to the final restoration from day one

Healing and Aftercare

The first few days matter most. We'll ask you to avoid disturbing the site, stick to softer foods, skip straws and vigorous rinsing, and keep the rest of your mouth clean while the graft settles. Some swelling and tenderness in the first days is normal, and we'll go over exactly what's expected versus what warrants a call to us.

After that early window, healing becomes largely a waiting game while bone regenerates. We schedule check-ins during that period so nothing is left to guesswork. For Encinitas patients coordinating grafting with implants or a full-arch case, we map out the timeline in advance — including approximate visit counts — so you can plan work, travel, and any events around it.

Payment, Financing, and Getting Started

We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and we don't bill insurance. That structure lets us plan treatment around what your case actually needs rather than around coverage limits. We welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we provide clear cost information in writing before you commit to anything.

For patients who prefer to spread payments out, we offer financing through Cherry. Applying is straightforward, and our team can walk you through it during your consultation.
