Dermal Fillers in La Jolla

Faces change in ways that are easy to notice but hard to name. Cheeks flatten slightly. The area under the eyes looks hollow even after a full night's sleep. Lips that were once full read thinner in photos. Lines around the mouth stay put when the face is at rest. Dermal fillers address those changes directly by restoring volume where it has been lost and refining contour where a little more definition would help. For our La Jolla patients, this is usually less about looking like someone else and more about looking rested, balanced, and recognizably themselves.
Dermal fillers are injectable gels placed beneath the skin to add volume, support underlying structure, and smooth areas where tissue has thinned. Depending on the area being treated, filler can lift a flattened cheek, soften the shadow along the lower eyelid, define a jawline, add projection to a chin, or bring shape and hydration to the lips. Results are visible quickly, and because placement is incremental, the process allows for careful adjustment rather than a single dramatic change.
What makes our approach different is the setting. We built Muse Aesthetics & Dentistry as one studio with two specialties, and that shapes how we plan filler treatment. Sarah Garces, NP-C, is our Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and facial balancing specialist, and Darian Anderson, DDS, is our cosmetic dentist. Monica Kieu, D.O., FACS serves as our Medical Director. When lips, chin, and lower face are involved, the teeth and smile underneath matter — and we can look at both together rather than sending you to three separate offices with three separate opinions.
Good candidates for filler are generally healthy adults bothered by volume loss, asymmetry, or lack of definition in a specific area. That covers a wide range of La Jolla patients: someone in their thirties who wants subtle lip definition, someone in their fifties addressing midface flattening, or someone finishing cosmetic dental work who wants the surrounding facial proportions to keep pace with a new smile. Filler is also useful for people who want a conservative first step before considering anything more involved.
Every treatment starts with a complimentary consultation. We look at your whole face at rest and in motion, listen to what specifically bothers you, and tell you honestly whether filler is the right tool. Sometimes it isn't, or sometimes a smaller amount in a different area accomplishes more than treating the spot you originally pointed to. That honesty is part of the restraint our practice was built around. If neurotoxins, microneedling, or dental treatment would serve you better — alone or alongside filler — we will say so.
What Treatment Day Looks Like
Appointments are efficient. We review your plan and confirm the areas being treated, cleanse the skin, and apply topical numbing for comfort. Many fillers also contain a local anesthetic. Product is placed with a needle or cannula in small amounts, and we pause to assess as we go, often having you sit up and look in a mirror so the result is evaluated the way you actually see yourself.
- Treatment time is typically short, and most people return to their normal day afterward
- Swelling, tenderness, and small bruises are common and temporary
- Results in most areas are visible immediately, with the final look settling over one to two weeks
- A follow-up lets us assess settled results and refine if needed
Aftercare is simple. Avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, and significant heat exposure for the first day or so. Keep pressure off the treated area, sleep with your head slightly elevated if you swell easily, and use cool compresses for comfort. Filler results are not permanent; longevity varies by product, placement, and individual metabolism, and we will talk through what to expect for your specific plan and when to consider maintenance.
Payment, Financing, and Getting Started
We are an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and do not bill insurance, which is standard for aesthetic treatment. We accept self-pay and cash patients, and we offer financing through Cherry for patients who prefer to spread treatment across manageable payments. You will know the cost of your plan before anything is scheduled — no surprises after the fact.
Our La Jolla patients tend to appreciate that coordinated care happens in one place. If you are already considering veneers, whitening, clear aligners, or a full smile makeover, we can plan facial aesthetics in concert with that work instead of treating them as unrelated projects. We also serve patients from Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and greater San Diego.
Reach out to schedule your complimentary consultation, and we will give you a straightforward assessment of whether dermal fillers make sense for you.
