Bone Grafting in San Diego

Bone Grafting in San Diego

Jawbone changes after a tooth is lost. Without a root pressing into it during chewing, the bone in that area begins to shrink and lose density — a process that can start within months and continue for years. Bone grafting is how we rebuild that foundation, adding volume back to the jaw so it can support a dental implant, hold a denture more securely, or simply maintain the shape of your face. For San Diego patients planning implant treatment, it's often the step that makes everything afterward possible.

A bone graft places grafting material into an area of the jaw where bone has thinned or receded. Over the following months, your body integrates that material, gradually replacing it with your own new bone. The result is a denser, taller, wider ridge — enough structure to anchor an implant post securely.

We see several situations that call for grafting. A tooth extracted years ago leaves a hollow in the ridge that has quietly collapsed. Advanced gum disease has eaten away at the bone surrounding the teeth. An upper back tooth site sits too close to the sinus cavity to hold an implant without added height. Long-term denture wear has flattened the ridge underneath. In each case, grafting restores what time and tissue loss took away, and it can also be placed immediately after an extraction to prevent the collapse from happening in the first place.

Grafting is rarely a goal on its own — it's the groundwork for something else. Most San Diego patients we treat are heading toward dental implants, including full-arch options like All-on-4 and All-on-6. Implants need bone to fuse with, and when there isn't enough, grafting creates it.

The benefits extend past implant eligibility:

  • A stable, dense base that allows an implant to integrate and bear normal chewing forces
  • Preserved facial contours, since bone loss in the jaw can cause the lower face to appear sunken or shortened
  • Better long-term outcomes for restorations that rest on or near the grafted site
  • The ability to pursue fixed teeth rather than removable appliances in some cases
  • Protection of neighboring teeth, whose support can be affected when nearby bone deteriorates

Because our practice plans cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics together, we think about how the underlying bone structure affects the way your smile sits within your face. That perspective matters when we're rebuilding a ridge that will eventually carry visible restorations.

What the Process Looks Like

Everything starts with a complimentary consultation. Dr. Darian Anderson examines the area, reviews imaging to assess how much bone is present and where it's missing, and talks through whether grafting is needed at all — sometimes it isn't. If it is, we explain what type of graft the site calls for and how it fits into your larger treatment timeline.

The procedure itself is done with the area fully numbed. We open the gum tissue to access the deficient bone, place the grafting material, and often cover it with a protective membrane that keeps the site stable while healing begins. The tissue is closed with sutures. Most single-site grafts take under an hour.

Then comes the part that requires patience. Integration happens on your body's schedule, typically over several months, and we monitor it with follow-up visits and imaging before moving forward with an implant. We'd rather wait for a site that's genuinely ready than rush into placement.

Healing and Aftercare

The first few days call for gentleness. Stick to soft, cool foods, avoid chewing on the treated side, and skip anything that creates suction in the mouth — no straws, no smoking, no vigorous rinsing. Swelling and tenderness are normal early on, and we'll give you specific instructions for managing both.

Keeping the area clean matters, but so does keeping it undisturbed. We'll show you exactly how to brush around the site without disrupting the graft. Strenuous exercise should wait a few days. Beyond that first week, most people return to normal routines while the deeper healing continues quietly underneath. We stay in touch throughout, and you can always reach us if something doesn't feel right.

Cost, Payment, and Scheduling in San Diego

We're a fee-for-service practice and don't bill insurance. That means no pre-authorization delays and no treatment decisions shaped by a third party — we plan what your case actually needs. We welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we offer financing through Cherry, which lets you spread the cost over monthly payments.

At your consultation we give you a clear picture of what your grafting and any follow-on implant work will involve before you commit to anything. We serve patients throughout San Diego along with Del Mar, Encinitas, La Jolla, and Solana Beach. If you've been told you don't have enough bone for an implant, that's usually a starting point, not a dead end — reach out and we'll take a look.
