You notice it in photos first — one front tooth that's slightly shorter than its neighbor, a chip from an old accident that never quite got addressed, or enamel that's picked up stains coffee and whitening strips can't touch. Maybe you've been quietly closing your lips in group shots for years. That's the conversation we have most often with Encinitas patients who come in asking about veneers: not a total reinvention, just a smile that finally matches how they see themselves.

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth. They change shape, color, length, alignment appearance, and surface texture all at once, which is why they're such a common answer for chips, worn edges, deep discoloration, small gaps, and teeth that look uneven next to each other. Instead of correcting each issue with a separate treatment, veneers let us design the front of your smile as one connected picture.

We offer two materials, and the right choice depends on your goals, your bite, and how much change you're after. Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a lab from ceramic, which resists staining and mimics the way natural enamel reflects light. They suit patients making a larger, longer-term change — multiple teeth, significant color correction, or a full smile makeover. Composite veneers are built from tooth-colored resin, shaped and polished directly on the tooth. They're a good fit when you're addressing one or two teeth, want a more conservative approach, or want to make a change without committing to lab-made ceramic. Composite is generally more repairable chairside; porcelain generally holds color and polish longer. We'll walk you through both honestly rather than steering you toward one by default.

Good candidates have healthy teeth and gums to begin with. If there's active decay, gum inflammation, or an untreated problem underneath, we handle that first — veneers are a cosmetic layer, not a fix for what's happening below the surface. We're a full-scope office with general dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery among our office types, so if something needs attention before we design your smile, you're not sent elsewhere to sort it out.

Some patients are better served by a different starting point. If crowding or rotation is significant, clear aligners first may let us place fewer veneers and remove less tooth structure. If your teeth are healthy and evenly shaped but simply dull, in-office or take-home whitening might get you where you want to go for less. We'd rather tell you that at your complimentary consultation than sell you something you don't need — restraint is part of how we practice.

What the Process Looks Like

Everything starts with a conversation and a look at your whole face, not just your teeth. Dr. Darian Anderson plans smile design in coordination with Sarah Garces, NP-C, our aesthetic nurse practitioner, because lip position, facial proportion, and tooth display all influence each other. We use Digital Smile Design so you can see the proposed result before committing to it — that preview step is where most of the important decisions get made.

Here's the typical path for Encinitas patients:

  • A complimentary consultation to discuss goals, review your dental health, and talk through porcelain versus composite
  • Digital Smile Design planning, with photos and a visual preview of the proposed outcome
  • Conservative preparation of the teeth involved, sized to the material and the amount of change
  • For porcelain: temporaries while your final veneers are fabricated, then a bonding and fine-tuning visit
  • For composite: shaping, curing, and polishing completed chairside, often in fewer appointments
  • A follow-up to check bite, comfort, and how everything looks in your day-to-day life

Caring for Veneers Afterward

Veneers are cared for much like natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss around every margin, and keep your regular cleanings and exams. The bonded edge where veneer meets tooth is the area that rewards good habits most, so we spend real time showing you how to clean it properly before you leave.

A few practical habits protect your investment. Don't use your front teeth to open packaging or bite hard objects like ice and pen caps. If you grind or clench at night, tell us — a nightguard is far cheaper than a replacement veneer. Composite benefits from limiting staining habits, since resin picks up color more readily than ceramic. Coming from Encinitas for periodic check-ins is simple, and we'll polish composite and inspect porcelain margins at those visits.

Payment and Financing

We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service studio and don't bill insurance. That gives us the freedom to plan treatment around your face and your goals rather than around coverage rules, and it means you'll know the full investment before anything begins. We welcome self-pay and cash patients.

For those who'd rather spread the cost, we offer financing through Cherry. Your consultation is complimentary, so Encinitas patients can get a real plan, a real preview, and real numbers before deciding anything.
