Microneedling in La Jolla

Maybe it's the fine lines that showed up around your eyes this year, or acne scars from a decade ago that makeup no longer covers, or skin texture that looks dull no matter how good your routine is. Microneedling addresses all of those concerns at the source — your skin's own repair process — and it's one of the treatments we perform most often for our La Jolla patients at our studio in San Diego.
Microneedling is a collagen induction treatment. Using a device with very fine needles, we create controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny, precise injuries trigger your body's natural wound-healing response, which means new collagen and elastin production in the treated area. Collagen is what keeps skin firm and smooth, and we make less of it as we age. Microneedling asks the skin to make more.
Because the treatment works with your own biology rather than adding a filler or a toxin, results build gradually and look like your skin, only better. That fits how we practice. Sarah Garces, NP-C, our Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and Facial Balancing Specialist, approaches every treatment with restraint and an eye on the whole face. We're not interested in making anyone look treated. We're interested in skin that looks healthy and a face that looks like itself.
The patients who come to us for microneedling usually fall into a few groups. Some are dealing with acne scarring — the shallow, pitted texture left behind after years of breakouts. Some are noticing early fine lines and want to get ahead of them. Others have sun exposure to account for, which matters in a coastal community like La Jolla where time outdoors is part of daily life. And some simply want better skin texture and tone before a wedding, a reunion, or a season of photographs.
Microneedling can be a good fit for most skin types and tones, which is one of its advantages over treatments that carry more risk of pigment changes. That said, candidacy depends on your skin's current condition, any active breakouts or infections, your medical history, and what you're hoping to change. We sort this out during a complimentary consultation, where Sarah looks at your skin in person and tells you honestly whether microneedling is the right tool — or whether something else, or nothing at all, would serve you better.
Here's what microneedling commonly helps with:
- Fine lines and early signs of aging
- Acne scars and uneven skin texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Overall skin tone, firmness, and radiance
- Skin that looks dull or tired despite good home care
What the Appointment Is Like
We start by cleansing the skin and applying a topical numbing agent, then give it time to take effect. Most people describe the treatment itself as a vibrating, prickling sensation rather than sharp pain. We adjust needle depth based on the area — the skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the cheeks or forehead, and we treat it accordingly. The active treatment portion is typically brief; the appointment as a whole runs longer because of numbing and preparation.
Afterward, your skin will look flushed, similar to a moderate sunburn, and may feel warm and tight. This is expected and usually settles over the following day or two. Some patients notice mild flaking or dryness as the skin turns over. We'll go through exactly what to do at home: keep the skin clean, keep it hydrated, avoid harsh actives like retinoids and acids for a few days, skip strenuous workouts and heat initially, and be diligent about sun protection. That last one matters year-round here.
Microneedling is generally done as a series rather than a single session, spaced out to let collagen rebuild between appointments. We'll map out a realistic plan at your consultation so you know what you're committing to before you start.
Scheduling, Payment, and Financing
We are an out-of-network, fee-for-service studio and do not bill insurance, which is standard for aesthetic treatments. We accept self-pay and cash payment, and we offer financing through Cherry for patients who'd rather spread the cost of a treatment series over time. You'll have clear numbers before anything is scheduled.
La Jolla patients often come to us for more than one reason. Muse was built so cosmetic dentistry and medical aesthetics live under one roof — Sarah on the aesthetics side, Darian Anderson, DDS on the cosmetic dentistry side, with Monica Kieu, D.O., FACS as our Medical Director. If you're considering veneers or whitening alongside skin treatment, we can plan them together instead of coordinating between three separate offices. Your consultation is complimentary, and there's no pressure to book anything the same day.
