Teeth Whitening in La Jolla

Teeth Whitening in La Jolla

Coffee before a morning meeting, red wine with dinner, iced tea on a warm afternoon — the everyday habits that make life in La Jolla enjoyable are also the ones that gradually dull a smile. Staining happens slowly enough that most people don't notice until they see a photo. Professional whitening is one of the most direct ways to reverse that, and it's often the first cosmetic step our La Jolla patients take before deciding whether they want anything more involved.

Whitening works by using a professional-strength peroxide gel that penetrates the enamel and breaks apart the pigment molecules trapped inside the tooth. That's a different process than what a whitening toothpaste does — those products mostly polish surface film. Because we're treating the deeper discoloration, the change tends to be more noticeable and more even across the whole smile.

We offer two paths at our studio: in-office whitening and take-home whitening. In-office treatment is done in a single appointment with a higher-concentration gel, with your gums and soft tissue protected throughout. It suits patients who want results quickly — before a wedding, a reunion, a round of professional headshots, or a trip. Take-home whitening uses custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, paired with a lower-concentration gel you wear over a series of days at home. It suits people who prefer to go gradually, who have some sensitivity, or who simply want control over the pace. Some patients do both: an in-office session to make the initial change, then trays to maintain it. When we talk through your goals, we'll tell you plainly which approach makes more sense for your teeth rather than defaulting to the more involved option.

Good candidates for whitening generally have healthy teeth and gums and discoloration that comes from food, drink, tobacco, or simple aging. Yellow-toned staining tends to respond especially well. Gray-toned discoloration, stains from certain medications, or a single dark tooth from past trauma may respond less predictably, and we'll say so upfront rather than let you expect something whitening can't deliver.

It's also worth knowing that whitening gel does not change the color of existing dental work. Crowns, bonding, and veneers stay the shade they were made. If you have restorations in the front of your mouth, we'll plan the sequence carefully — often whitening first, then matching any future work to your new shade. And if your goals go beyond color, whitening may be one piece of a larger plan. Because our studio combines cosmetic dentistry and medical aesthetics under one roof, Dr. Darian Anderson and Sarah Garces, NP-C, can look at your smile in the context of your whole face rather than in isolation. Your consultation with us is complimentary, so there's no cost to find out where you stand.

What the Process Looks Like

Your first visit is a conversation and an exam. We look at the condition of your enamel, your gum health, any existing restorations, and the type of staining you have. We talk about what shade you're hoping for and what's realistic. If take-home trays are the plan, we take impressions so the trays fit closely and keep gel on the teeth instead of leaking onto your gums.

Here's what La Jolla patients can generally expect:

  • A complimentary consultation before any commitment
  • A clear recommendation between in-office and take-home whitening, or a combination
  • Gum and soft-tissue protection during in-office treatment
  • Custom-fitted trays and clear wear instructions for take-home whitening
  • Guidance on managing temporary sensitivity
  • A plan for keeping your results

Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect of whitening, and it typically fades. We'll review how to reduce it and when to pause if needed.

Aftercare and Keeping Your Results

The first day or two after whitening is when teeth are most receptive to picking up new color, so we suggest going light on coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, berries, and tomato-based sauces during that window. After that, normal habits are fine — rinsing with water after staining drinks and staying consistent with brushing and flossing does most of the maintenance work.

Whitening isn't permanent for anyone. Most patients touch up periodically, which is one reason take-home trays are useful to have even if you started in the chair.

Payment and Financing

We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service studio and don't bill insurance. That keeps our recommendations based on what your smile needs rather than what a plan will approve. We welcome self-pay and cash patients.

For patients who'd rather spread the cost out, we offer financing through Cherry. We'll go over the numbers during your complimentary consultation so you know exactly what you're deciding on before anything begins.
