A chipped front tooth from years ago, an old bonding that's gone gray at the edges, teeth that have always been a little too small or spaced a little too wide — these are the everyday things people stop noticing in the mirror but still feel in photos. Veneers are one of the most direct ways to address them, and for our La Jolla patients, they're often the treatment that finally ties a smile together instead of fixing one tooth at a time.

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the shape, color, alignment, and proportion of what people see when you talk and smile, without altering the tooth from the back or the biting surfaces in the way a crown does. We use veneers to close small gaps, even out teeth that sit slightly forward or back, lengthen worn edges, reshape teeth that never quite matched their neighbors, and lighten discoloration that whitening alone won't move — the kind of internal staining that stays put no matter how many whitening trays you use.

We offer both porcelain veneers and composite veneers, and the difference matters. Porcelain veneers are custom-crafted in a lab from ceramic, which handles light much the way natural enamel does and resists staining well. They suit patients making a comprehensive change across the front teeth, or anyone who wants the most refined result for a full smile design. Composite veneers are sculpted directly from tooth-colored resin, usually in fewer visits and with less preparation of the tooth. They suit smaller corrections — one chipped edge, a single tooth that reads darker, a gap that needs closing — and patients who want to start more conservatively. In many cases we'll discuss a plan that uses one or the other based on how many teeth are involved, what your bite is doing, and what you want long term.

Good candidates for veneers have healthy teeth and gums underneath. Veneers are a cosmetic layer, not a repair for decay or gum disease, so we address anything active first. If your concern is primarily crowding or rotation, we may talk about clear aligners before veneers, so the underlying position is right and the veneers can stay conservative rather than compensating for alignment. If discoloration is the whole issue, in-office or take-home whitening may get you there without veneers at all. We'd rather tell you that than sell you something you don't need.

Because our studio pairs cosmetic dentistry with medical aesthetics, we look at a smile in the context of the whole face — lip position, proportion, how the teeth show at rest and in a full smile. Dr. Darian Anderson handles smile design, and Sarah Garces, NP-C, focuses on facial balancing, which means a La Jolla patient considering veneers and something like neurotoxins or filler isn't getting two plans from two offices that never speak. That coordination is the reason Muse exists.

What the Process Looks Like

We start with a complimentary consultation, which is a real conversation rather than a sales appointment. We listen to what bothers you, look at your teeth and face together, and often use Digital Smile Design to plan and preview proportions before anything is prepared.

  • A consultation and exam to confirm veneers are the right tool for your goals
  • Digital planning and design of shape, length, and shade
  • Minimal preparation of the tooth surface where needed, based on the plan
  • For porcelain: impressions or scans sent to the lab, with temporaries in between
  • For composite: direct sculpting and polishing, often completed in fewer visits
  • Bonding, bite check, and refinement of the final result

Caring for Veneers Afterward

Veneers are cared for much like natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss around every margin, and keep up with regular cleanings and exams so the gum line and the tooth underneath stay healthy. What changes is the habits we ask you to retire — biting nails, opening packaging with your teeth, chewing ice or pens. If you clench or grind at night, we'll talk about protecting your investment.

Composite veneers can pick up stain over time from coffee, tea, and red wine, and they can be polished or repaired chairside. Porcelain resists staining better but is repaired differently, so we want to see you if anything chips or feels rough.

Payment and Financing for La Jolla Patients

We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service studio and don't bill insurance. That lets us plan treatment around your face and your goals rather than a benefits schedule. We welcome self-pay and cash patients, and we quote your plan clearly before you commit.

For patients who'd rather spread the cost out, we offer financing through Cherry. Bring your questions to the complimentary consultation — we'll walk through porcelain versus composite, the number of teeth involved, and the numbers, so you can decide without pressure.
