Microneedling in Solana Beach

Fine lines around the eyes, acne scars that never quite faded, enlarged pores, uneven texture from years of sun — these are the concerns that bring most Solana Beach patients to us asking about microneedling. It's a treatment that works with your skin rather than on top of it, using your body's own repair response to rebuild collagen from the inside out. And because we plan facial aesthetics and cosmetic dentistry together under one roof, we're always looking at your skin in the context of your whole face, not as an isolated problem to be fixed.
Microneedling uses a device fitted with very fine, sterile needles that create controlled micro-channels in the surface of the skin. These tiny injuries are too small to cause visible damage, but they're enough to trigger the body's natural wound-healing cascade — which means new collagen and elastin production in the treated area. Over the following weeks, that new collagen firms and smooths the skin from beneath.
What makes microneedling appealing for so many of our Solana Beach patients is that it doesn't rely on heat, chemicals, or removing layers of skin. It's your own tissue doing the rebuilding. That makes it a versatile option for a range of concerns: softening the appearance of acne scarring, improving skin texture, minimizing the look of large pores, and addressing early fine lines. Sarah Garces, NP-C, our Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and facial balancing specialist, tailors needle depth and treatment areas to each patient's skin and goals rather than running everyone through the same protocol.
We see a wide mix of situations. Some patients come in because a specific event is coming — a wedding, a reunion, a milestone birthday — and they want their skin looking its best in photographs. Others have lived with acne scarring since their teens and have simply decided it's time. A lot of coastal Southern California life is spent outdoors, and years of sun exposure show up as texture changes and crepiness long before anyone considers themselves "old."
Then there are the patients who find us for cosmetic dentistry and end up asking about skin. Someone planning veneers or a smile makeover with Dr. Darian Anderson is already thinking about how their face reads to other people. Microneedling often fits naturally into that larger plan. Good candidates are generally in good health with realistic expectations and no active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area. During your complimentary consultation, we review your medical history, skin history, and goals to confirm whether microneedling is the right starting point — and we'll say so if something else would serve you better.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
Your appointment starts with cleansing the skin and applying a topical numbing cream, which needs time to take full effect. Most patients describe the treatment itself as a prickling or vibrating sensation rather than sharp pain. The device is passed methodically over each area, with depth adjusted for the thinner skin around the eyes versus thicker areas like the cheeks. A single session typically covers the full face, though targeted areas like the neck or specific scarring can be addressed as well.
Here's what most patients can expect in the days following:
- Redness similar to a mild sunburn, usually most noticeable on day one
- Skin that feels tight, warm, or slightly sensitive for a day or two
- Possible light flaking or dryness as the skin turns over
- Gentle cleansing, heavy moisturizing, and strict sun protection during recovery
- Avoiding makeup, active skincare ingredients, and intense workouts short-term
We give every patient written aftercare instructions and a direct line to reach us with questions. Because collagen builds gradually, results develop over weeks rather than overnight, and many concerns — particularly textural scarring — respond best to a series of sessions spaced apart. We'll map out a realistic timeline with you rather than overpromising from a single visit.
Scheduling, Payment, and Getting Started
We're an out-of-network, fee-for-service studio and don't bill insurance, which is standard for aesthetic treatments. We accept self-pay and cash, and we offer financing through Cherry for patients who'd rather spread the cost of a treatment series over time. You'll know your full investment before anything is scheduled — no surprises after the fact.
Solana Beach patients appreciate that they don't have to drive to one office for skin and another for their smile. Sarah, Dr. Anderson, and our Medical Director, Dr. Monica Kieu, D.O., FACS, work from a shared philosophy of restraint and artistry — we'd rather do less, done well, than more for its own sake.
Start with a complimentary consultation. Bring your questions, and we'll give you an honest read on whether microneedling belongs in your plan.
